Song Of The Day:

Bonanza & Son’s 'Song Of The Day’ is
’Hold On To Your Love’ by John Hiatt.
Taken from his 2011 LP ‘Dirty Jeans & Mudslide Hymns’.

The whole album is a winner on New West Records.

Our next gig is The Gaslight Club @ Filthy MacNasty’s

Tuesday 7th August 2012

Named after and taking it’s inspiration from the famous Greenwich Village Café, The Gaslight Club which was a favourite haunt of the young Bob Dylan and where he premiered early songs such as ‘Masters Of War’.

Live acoustic sets from

Dana Immanuel:
I had a discussion with Dana recently just before a Jim White gig in Wetherspoons. 'We' were in Wetherspoons, not the Jim White gig I should hasten to add... That was at the more salubrious Union Chapel.

Anyhow, Dana turned to me and asked 'how would you describe my music'. ‘Well', I said, 'Gothic-Country comes to mind but in the true sense of Gothic, so more Edgar Allen Poe than Marilyn Manson'… I also said that a Journalist friend of mine described it as 'Country-Noir'.

I think that whole conversation says more about what you can expect from tonights show than the paragraph of pretentious, music jouranalist blurb I initially intended to write.

So we have it then, a female Jim White, pissed in Wetherspoons with a Banjo and an attitude, praying at the alter of primal Rock ’N’ Roll in its infancy. Sounds good dunnit?

Emma Scarr:
Tonight Emma Scarr will play a selection of songs both in the guise of her solo, Folk-Americana with guitar and vocals and possibly slide-guitar resonator and also as Black/Scarr her more upbeat, Country duet with fiddle. Both incarnations are a delight to hear and see live and you won’t be disappointed. Emma has an uncanny knack of taking traditional, American Roots music and seamlessly imbuing it with a Britishness and a truly down-home London feel.

We’ve uploaded our latest radio broadcast and we’re very excited as it features our conversation with Denny Tedesco, Director of the award winning documentary ’The Wrecking Crew’…

The film documents the work of a group of studio musicians in 60’s California who played on some of the most famous songs ever & changed the face of popular music. Songs you would have hitherto assumed were played by the actual bands including The Beach Boys, Elvis, The Byrds, Bing Crosby, The Monkees. Other notable artists employing the Wrecking Crew's talents include Nancy Sinatra, Bobby Vee, The Partridge Family, The Mamas & The Papas, The Carpenters, The 5th Dimension, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel and Nat King Cole as well as top producers including Phil Spector and Lee Hazlewood.

The Wrecking Crew also worked on many of Glen Campbell’s classics and Campbell himself was an early member of The Wrecking Crew as well as Denny’s Father and ace guitarist Tommy Tedesco. Other stalwart musicians in The Wrecking Crew included Al Casey, Carol Kaye, Billy Strange, Howard Roberts, James Burton, Leon Russell, Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John), Carol Kaye, Ray Pohlman, Bill Pitman, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Jim Gordon and Jack Nitzsche.

The film is truly awe-inspiring & a mind-blowing story that needs to be told. It’s an overwhelming ear & eye-opening experience like a Rock ’N’ Roll rollercoaster around the musical Universe. I will NEVER listen to music in quite the same way again.

Follow Bonanza & Son on Mixcloud

+ live session from North Carolina’s Greg Humphreys.
+ our usual features, 'well what we could fit in, that is, as our guests were so engrossing.

A really super, super show!

Song Of The Day:

Bonanza & Son's ’Song Of The Day’ is ‘Building Fires’ from the soundtrack to the 1982 film ’The Border’…

Sung by Brenda Patterson with John Hiatt in the vocal shadows, 'Building Fires’ was Written by Jim Dickinson the ace, Memphis producer with a maverick philosophy and an outlaw spirit... He has worked with a diverse selection of people including Dylan, Primal Scream, The Rolling Stones, Spiritualized, Mudhoney and Ry Cooder who held the reins for this soundtrack.

Jim Dickinson is also notable for producing the brothers Cody & Luther of The North Mississippi Allstars, NOT however in the studio but from his loins as they are his Sons! Ha ha!..

In my head I can hear Gram Parsons or Gene Clark singing this song although Brenda Patterson is at the height of her game on this track and untouchable if you ask me… Enjoy.

Song Of The Day

We’ve decided to start a new blog feature Bonanza & Son's ’Song Of The Day’

It might be something current or something in the news, someones birthday or maybe a brand new track we’ve been sent and not yet released or just the first tune we listen to that day but whatever it is you can be sure it will be a quality slab of music…

Today it’s Kris Kristofferson’s ‘If You Don’t like Hank Williams’ which comes from Kristofferson’s 1976 Monument LP ’Surreal Thing’ and features one of our favourite guitar lines ever played by Jerry McGee… The song also features backing vocals by the actor Gary Busey…

Gary Busey hasn’t had a good time of things in recent years having suffered suspected brain damage due to a motorcycle accident, subsequent divorce, issues with cocaine and with massive, finanacial liabilities filing for bankruptcy earlier this year… Poor bloke, we wish him the best of luck.

SONG OF THE DAY, THURSDAY 26TH JULY 2012:
Link Wray-'God Out West’

This track is from Link Wray’s, eponymously titled, 1971 LP and comes in a fantastic die-cut, fold out sleeve. The album came from a very basic, rootsy recording session which took place in a chicken hut on Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray Jr’s farm… Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY, Wednesday 25TH JULY 2012:

Geno Lanzi-'Countdown 4-3-2-1’.

'I feel fine thanks...The scenery is out of this world... Thanks for the lights... It's mighty hot in here’.

Rockin' in Outer Space, Vol 1

SONG OF THE DAY, Tuesday 24TH JULY 2012:

George and Caplin - 'Franco Cleef Wyoming Reconstruction.'

Oh and it’s our ‘Accompanying Film Of The Day’ too…

Yes, we like BOTH kinds of music we do!
Denver Duo ‘George & Caplin’ aka Jeffrey Wentworth Stevens (Morriconez/Wentworth Kersey) and Jason Iselin provide entrancing soundscapes with their take on ‘Psychedelic, Shoegaze-Drone Americana... or something like that!

'Countrier Than Thou’…

‘Country • Americana • Bluegrass • Rock ’N’ Roll'

@ The Lock Tavern

Thursday 26th July 2012

This month Bonanza has a truly authentic, Americana line-up as both our acts hail from across the pond from the good ole US of A…

Tonight we have genuine 'Okie from Muskogee' Bob Collum with his Power-Popping, Americana combo.
Also gracing the Lock Tavern will be North Carolina, world traversing troubadour Greg Humphreys with his unique and beguiling Americana-Soul and Bluegrass.

Live acts:

Greg Humphreys:
All the way from North Carolina USA, Greg brings a guitar case full of authentic yet unique and beguiling Americana-Soul and Bluegrass.

He will be showcasing brand new material as well as his back catalogue of authentic American character sketches inspired by experience, observation, imagination and affairs of the heart. You may know these people; you may even be one of these people. Every song is a true story.

greg is not averse to giving a wink and a nod as well as making a critique of social networks' current ubiquity; how these networks have changed our interactions with the world and how they connect and reveal us to each other but also how their presence can serve to isolate us or complicate relationships.

'People You May Know’ was Greg’s third solo album, following 2009’s 'Trunk Songs' and 2010’s ‘Realign Your Mind’.

Bonanza is very happy to have this travelling troubadour aboard and that his meandering path of genre adventures in songwriting crosses the Lock Tavern stage.

Expect a ‘peppering’ of Country-Soul Classics, Folk Songs, Beach Music, Murder Ballads, Jazz licks and Classic Pop all of which flavour this man’s Gumbo!
www.facebook.com/Greghumphreysmusic

+ Bob Collum:
Upbeat, Rocking Americana and Roots Music from Oklahoman relocated to London. This is solid Country-rock with string-band laments and shiny singer/songwriter pop gems done up in their best western wear. Wouldn’t go amiss on a Tom Petty album with a leftfield, Power-Pop approach.

Bob has a brand new Mini LP just out entitled, rather aptly, 'The Ungrateful Depression’ which has been gaining heavy radio rotation recently and hasn’t been off the Bonanza & Son stereo down home on the Ponderosa or on our ResonanceFM radio show.

The album has a new found assuredness and Country-Rocks it like a runaway stage coach in a whiskey drenched saloon.

'Hook-heavy, steel guitar-driven, rootsy power pop’... Time Out
