TONIGHT Thursday 30th August 2012

Thursday 30th August 2012

Bonanza & Son Promotions Present:
'Countrier Than Thou’…

‘Country • Americana • Bluegrass • Rock ’N’ Roll'

@ The Lock Tavern

Live acts:

The Blind Hearts:
In our opinion The Blind Hearts are London’s finest, young, wonky-Country, Rock ’n’ Roll ’n’ Muddy Delta-Blues upstarts (Is that a new genre?).

They possess a sound that is both down-home and yet slick and highly sophisticated Country-Rock with a 60’s Pop sensibility in the very best sense of the word and dare we say it, they bring something new to Country and Americana.

There are elements of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers in the mix as well as a hint of The Paisley Underground bands and a healthy slab of the pure Britishness of The Faces, The Stones and even The Waterboys come to mind.

They’ve been touring the festivals incessantly both home and abroad and so Bonanza & Son is happy to have finally pinned them down to grace The Lock Tavern stage.

Oh and their fantastic video single ‘(Oh Lord & I) Keep On Losing’ is the Official Selection for The London Festival Of Sci-Fi 2012... Well that accolade is certainly a first for us here at Countrier Than Thou!
www.facebook.com/theblindhearts

+ Lonesome Dave Ferguson:
Although only utilising harmonica, human beat-box vocals, live loops and then layering and building those loops to construct a song you’ll actually think you’re hearing a full Mariachi, Dub Orchestra! Not your typical singer-songwriter type show this one so expect more in-your-face dance-style grooves served up in a dirty, swampy, Deep-South style...Nothing is pre-recorded so once a song is played it's gone; as in LIVE ya dig?.

South African born, Italian resident and currently world-touring, Dave has recently played alongside Son of Dave, The Arlenes and Counting Crows to name but three.

Expect both originals and some Blues/Americana off-kilter classics and other unnexpected gems and nuggets. Genre classification is futile but it could be 'Trance-Blues & Country-Dub for an imaginary Western set somewhere between the Rio Grande and Alpha Centauri’. Dig!

+ Jack Day:
Hornsey lad Jack Day is building up a strong reputation on the European Americana and Folk scene with his solid live performances and songs recorded by Brian O’Shaugnessy (Primal Scream, Beth Orton, Denim) at Bark Studios in London. His sound is fiercely solo and full of soul, set to a driving Telecaster, soaring piano or gentle Country picking Jack’s vocal is fired with an authentic and believable energy and passion, delivering songs that bring to mind Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Buckley, Townes van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waites or even Son House.

+ Sour Milk Sea:
Folk intricacies with an epic, ethereal beauty and anyone who names themselves after a George Harrison penned outtake from The White Album sessions is just alright with us

The Bourne Legacy

Bonanza & Son went to see ‘The Bourne Legacy’ last week and it's actually really rather exciting. There's an interesting augmenting of the original plot-line and this is also a film that totally justifies it's running time of 135 Minutes with a rather complex plot so not for thee of short attention spans... No Matt Damon, which for many will be a relief but a more than acceptable ‘grows on ya’ type performance from Jeremy Renner but even better to see Albert Finney, Stacey Keach and 'our boy' Paddy Considine deservedly making inroads into Hollywood... Go see…

Oh and talking of film, tonight it’s The Bonanza & Son Film Club & Quiz at Filthy MacNasty’s… It’s free to enter the quiz and there are prizes, what more could you ask for?

Monday, August 27, 2012

The week ahead...

Howdy folks,
We hope you are enjoying the Bank holiday.

Ok, well it's another busy week ahead for Bonanza & Son…

First up on Wednesday it’s our Film Club and Quiz at Filthy MacNasty’s. As always it is completely free to enter the quiz and there are prizes!!!

We’ll be playing the best in film soundtracks from the past to the present day and screening films as a back drop including:
Francis Ford Coppola’s ’The Conversation’ from 1974, Ingmar Bergman’s The Hour Of The Wolf from 1968 and Charles Laughton's 'Night Of The Hunter' from 1955.

On Thursday it’s 'Countrier Than Thou’ at The Lock Tavern in Camden and what a line up we have for you with FOUR, class, live acts (see below) plus DJs playing Country & Americana til Midnight and again it is all completely FREE ENTRY!

Then, finally, on Friday Bonanza & Son will be DJing a fine blend of Krautrock, Americana, Psych’ and Rock ’N’ Roll at The Lauriston Pub, 162 Victoria Park Rd, Hackney, E9 from 9pm til Midnight.

We hope to see you all and hope you have a smashing week ahead whatever you do.

Just in case anyone turns up Bonanza & Son was double booked at 3 Crowns tonight but no bother cos the date has been rescheduled and better still, it means I get to relax with Bonanza Son. In fact I got back home to find him playing ’Stud Spider’ by Mr Tony Joe White, now THAT, to me my friends, is true success; not material wealth, not fame, not houses not money, nor power but REAL success, real love, real peace and true happiness and contentment…
Peace & love to all…

Bonanza & Son ‘Song Of The Day’…

Taken from Tony Joe White's third album ’Tony Joe’ from 1970 on Monument Records…

Jo Nesbø’s ‘Jackpot’ ('Arme Riddere')

Yesterday we went to see Jo Nesbø's 'Jackpot' AKA 'Arme Riddere'... Gory but equally hilarious, Norwegian, lowlife, gangster, caper movie with more twists than a humid summer in Kansas... Nesbø also wrote the story for this years 'Headhunters' which is a contender for Bonanza & Son's film of the year and 'Jackpot' is up there too. The Norwegians never disappoint!..

Nice soundtrack too including ‘Players In A Drag’ by Charlotte & the Co Stars which features Torbjörn 'Ebbot' Lundberg from Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Following our Saturday sojourn into the annals and recorded archives of the Godfather of Funk & Soul, Mr James Joe Brown Jr. we unearthed another two of his excursions into Cowboy Country and here they are:

First up from Brown’s 1974 LP ‘Reality’ is his version of ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ as originally made famous by Roy Rogers in 1944 and subsequently Bing Crosby and Gene Autry…

I really love Brown’s version as it not only encompasses the Pioneer spirit of Roy Rogers cut but also possesses a militant, African-American element; for me it’s his Black-American version of ‘This Land Is Your Land’… Hey, now imagine if he’d done a version of that?

It is also worth pointing out that the original song was written forty years previously by Cole Porter and even then was based predominantly on an original poem by Bob Fletcher who later sold Porter the publishing rights. Fletcher certainly lived to regret that move.

Secondly, we have James Brown’s version of Bill Anderson’s 1963 smash hit ‘Still’ from Brown's 1979 LP ’The Original Disco Man’.

Sadly other than maybe one or two tracks, ‘Still’ is the only redeeming feature of an otherwise signifier of Brown’s steady decline but I guess that was inevitable for someone who, hitherto, had reached such monumental heights combined with an equally mountainous Class A drug intake… We love you James.

Saturday, August 11, 2012

Here at Bonanza Chateau we find ourselves on a bit of a James Brown tip today which has come as a bit of a surprise to me and even more surprisingly I’ve managed to find some Country excursions a la James Brown which I’ll post after this heavy semi-abstract slab of Jazz Funk which to our ears could just as easily be Miles as Brown!..

Also, some other surprises are that James Brown was born in South Carolina which I didn’t know; I always assumed he was born in Georgia, although his birthplace of Barnwell is only about 50KM from the Georgia state line… Something else I didn’t know was Brown, obviously of African-American origin was also of Native-American (Apache) descent through his father. Not only that but he had Asian ancestry through his mother, who was also half African-American. Fascinating!

BONANZA & SON 'SONG OF THE DAY’.

Bonanza & Son 'Song Of The Day’.

Tompall Glaser-'It’ll Be Her’

Originally written and recorded by Billy Ray Reynolds (soon to be a 'featured artist' on Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM) and also our joint equal ‘Song Of The Day’.

Tompall’s version featured above is one of a number he cut of this song and is taken from his 1977 LP 'Tompall Glaser and His Outlaw Band’ on ABC records. (Ignore what the YouTube description says, they’ve got it wrong!) Also not to be confused with his previous and similarly titled 'The Great Tompall and His Outlaw Band' LP from 1975 on MGM.

This cut is Bonanza & Son’s favourite of Tompall’s versions of ’It’ll Be Her' with it’s pounding, 'tight-as-a-ducks-arse' ryhthm section and sublime guitar/pedal steel interplay topped off with the dirty, gutteral, growl of Glaser's voice that is the hallmark of his best records and for us this is the one.

The whole LP is a driving, freigh-train of a rowdy record and a quintessential example of the renegade, sub-genre that is ‘Outlaw Country’… Enjoy.

Bonanza & Son are taking a little summer break except for a few choice DJ sets + 'Countrier Than Thou' at the end of August (see below). Playing Live

Dana Immanuel:
I had a discussion with Dana recently just before a Jim White gig in Wetherspoons. 'We' were in Wetherspoons, not the Jim White gig I should hasten to add... That was at the more salubrious Union Chapel.

Anyhow, Dana turned to me and asked 'how would you describe my music'. ‘Well', I said, 'Gothic-Country comes to mind but in the true sense of Gothic so more Edgar Allen Poe than Marilyn Manson'… I also said that a Journalist friend of mine described it as 'Country-Noir'.

I think that whole conversation says more about what you can expect from tonights show than the paragraph of pretentious, music jouranalist blurb I initially intended to write.

So there you have it then, a female Jim White, pissed in Wetherspoons with a Banjo and an attitude, praying at the alter of primal Rock ’N’ Roll in its infancy. Sounds good dunnit?
www.facebook.com/danaimmanuelsayshellyeah

Emma Scarr:
Tonight Emma Scarr will play a selection of songs both in the guise of her solo, Folk-Americana with guitar and vocals and possibly slide-guitar resonator and also as Black/Scarr her more upbeat, Country duet with fiddle. Both incarnations are a delight to hear and see live and you won’t be disappointed. Emma has an uncanny knack of taking traditional, American Roots music and seamlessly imbuing it with a Britishness and a truly down-home, London feel.

The film documents the work of a group of studio musicians in 60’s California who played on some of the most famous songs ever & changed the face of popular music. Songs you would have hitherto assumed were played by the actual bands including The Beach Boys, Elvis, The Byrds, Bing Crosby, The Monkees. Other notable artists employing the Wrecking Crew's talents include Nancy Sinatra, Bobby Vee, The Partridge Family, The Mamas & The Papas, The Carpenters, The 5th Dimension, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel and Nat King Cole as well as top producers including Phil Spector and Lee Hazlewood.

The Wrecking Crew also worked on many of Glen Campbell’s classics and Campbell himself was an early member of The Wrecking Crew as well as Denny’s Father and ace guitarist Tommy Tedesco. Other stalwart musicians in The Wrecking Crew included Al Casey, Carol Kaye, Billy Strange, Howard Roberts, James Burton, Leon Russell, Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John), Carol Kaye, Ray Pohlman, Bill Pitman, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Jim Gordon and Jack Nitzsche.

The film is truly awe-inspiring & a mind-blowing story that needs to be told. It’s an overwhelming ear & eye-opening experience like a Rock ’N’ Roll rollercoaster around the musical Universe. I will NEVER listen to music in quite the same way again.

+ live session from North Carolina’s Greg Humphreys.
+ our usual features, 'well what we could fit in, that is, as our guests were so engrossing. Great show!
